Sport Fishing Tips and Techniques

  • Take some binoculars fishing! You can use them to see what other successful anglers are using for bait, spot bait ball ups from a distance, or check for changes in the weather conditions by scanning the horizon. Or you can just enjoy the views or nature and make your day fishing more enjoyable.
  • Follow this link for information on Where to Fish on Vancouver Island.
  • Brine your salmon bait! It’s a fact that many top salmon anglers brine their anchovies or sardines in salt before going fishing for the day. This makes the bait tougher, last longer, and retain its shape better while trolling. Some anglers prefer liquid brine while others just heavily salt the bait. And still others add scents and oils or WD40 to the brine to add that extra attractant.
  • Forget about your flasher if you're using anchovies or herring as bait for winter springs. The water clarity is so good in the winter that the fish can spot your bait from much greater distances than in the other times of the year. Besides, it is so much more fun to play a fish without any flasher on the line.
  • Approximate Fish Weight Formula

    Formula : W = (L * (G * G))/R, where:

    Imperial calculations

W : weight in decimal pounds.

    L : length in inches.

G : girth in inches (default is .58*L).

    R : constant (800 for trouts, 900 for pikes).
    Metric calculations

    W : weight in kilograms.

    L : length in centimeters.

G : girth in centimeters (default is .58*L).

    R : constant (28850 for trouts, 32450 for pikes).
By this formula a trout of length 44cm (17.3") would approximately weigh 1.0kg (2.2lb)
